Why The Rebello in Porto Portugal is one of my favorite hotels in the world

Some hotels impress you. Others exhale into you.

That’s how I felt staying at The Rebello in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.

There are beautiful hotels in the world, and then there are hotels that become part of how you remember a place forever. For me, The Rebello became part of my love story with northern Portugal.

From the warm hospitality to the breathtaking views overlooking the Douro River, this hotel felt restorative, grounding, luxurious, and deeply intentional in every possible way.

And that’s exactly why it earned a place on my list of favorite hotels in the world.

Absolutely Incredible Location

Location matters so much to me when I travel, and The Rebello absolutely nailed it.

The hotel is located in Vila Nova de Gaia, directly across the river from Porto, and everything I wanted felt within reach. I could walk to wine tastings, stroll along the waterfront, visit museums, cross the bridge by foot directly into Porto, or take a quick ride to the beach.

One of my favorite parts of staying in Vila Nova de Gaia was that it felt calmer and more relaxed than staying directly in the center of Porto, while still giving me immediate access to everything.

The hotel is also located near the famous port wine cellars, which made the experience feel even more connected to the culture and history of northern Portugal. The Rebello arranged a wine tasting for me at Churchill’s, which was only a short walk away and became one of my favorite experiences from the trip.

I also loved being walking distance from the WOW Museum, the waterfront, and the bridge connecting Gaia and Porto.

And when a local told me the best sunsets were at the beach, I took an Uber that was less than ten minutes away and ended up watching one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen over the Atlantic Ocean.

Views felt like living artwork

The moment I entered my room, I was completely blown away by the view.

The way the hotel is designed makes the scenery feel framed intentionally, almost like you’re staring at a painting. From my balcony and bed, I could see the Douro River, the bridge, and Porto glowing in the distance.

Every morning I woke up to stunning sunrises pouring through the curtains while the breeze drifted into the room. I would sit with coffee or tea and simply take in the stillness.

At night, the city lights reflected across the river in a way that felt almost unreal.

It was cinematic without trying to be.

The kind of beauty that makes you slow down naturally.

The Hotel Design Felt Warm, Earthy, and Luxurious

I love when a hotel reflects the feeling of the destination around it, and The Rebello did that beautifully.

The entire space felt warm, grounded, and intentional. The soft earth tones, stone textures, lighting, and natural materials created an atmosphere that felt luxurious without feeling cold or overly formal.

I also loved that despite being incredibly elevated, the hotel still felt comfortable and calming.

It felt like somewhere you could truly settle into instead of simply passing through.

And as someone who loves boutique luxury hotels, this is exactly why I gravitate toward Hilton’s Small Luxury Hotels collection whenever possible. You get the warmth and personality of a boutique hotel while still maintaining a high-end experience.

Thoughtful, personal hospitality

One of the things that made this stay so memorable was how cared for I felt.

When I arrived, there was a beautiful fruit plate waiting in my room. Throughout my stay, the hotel staff continued leaving thoughtful little surprises for me to discover after returning from a day out exploring.

One evening it was chocolates.

Another evening, it was a lavender and tangerine shower steamer waiting in my bathroom.

That shower steamer honestly turned my shower into a full spa experience after a long day walking through Porto.

Those small details mattered.

They really made the experience feel personal, warm, and intentional in a way that stayed with me long after the trip ended.

Incredible spa experience

Hands down, one of the best massages of my life.

The spa area at The Rebello was stunning. Warm peach-toned walls, soft lighting, a heated indoor pool, and an atmosphere that instantly made me feel calmer the moment I walked in.

I spent time relaxing by the pool reading, slowing down before treatments, and simply enjoying the quiet.

It felt restorative in every sense of the word.

The spa became one of my favorite parts of the entire stay because it matched the overall feeling of the hotel so perfectly:
peaceful, grounding, and deeply relaxing.

It’s where i first fell in love with northern portugal

I truly believe this hotel shaped the way I experienced northern Portugal.

Everything about the stay encouraged me to slow down and savor where I was. Slow mornings with coffee and river views. Long walks through Gaia and Porto. Wine tastings. Rooftop cocktails. Spa afternoons. Watching the city glow at night from my balcony.

Even though I was far from home, I somehow felt completely at home there.

And honestly, that’s rare.

The Rebello gave me a version of travel I want more of in my life:
beautiful, intentional, restorative, and deeply connected to place.

I already know I’ll return to Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia again and again and again.

And when I do, I know exactly where I’ll stay.

Why The Ivy Hotel in Baltimore is one of my favorite hotels in the world

I’ve stayed in hotels across more than 25 countries. I love boutique hotels. I love luxury resorts. I love thoughtful hospitality. I love places that feel transportive from the second you walk through the door.

And somehow, one of my favorite hotels in the world is sitting right here in Baltimore.

And from the moment you pull up, The Ivy makes you feel cared for.

A Luxury Hotel That Feels Like a Very Wealthy Friend’s Mansion

The first time I stayed at The Ivy, I immediately understood why people become obsessed with it.

You arrive and are greeted by name. There’s champagne waiting. If it’s your first visit, they’ll often give you a tour of the property, which feels less like a hotel and more like being invited into an impossibly elegant private mansion.

Because technically… it was one.

The Ivy is a restored historic mansion in Baltimore with fewer than 20 rooms, and every room feels different. Some feel romantic and dramatic. Others feel soft and literary. All of them somehow manage to feel luxurious and deeply comfortable at the same time.

This isn’t the kind of luxury hotel where you’re afraid to touch anything.

It’s the kind where you immediately exhale.

The Included Afternoon Tea Is Part of the Experience

One of my favorite things about The Ivy is that they actually encourage guests to arrive early so they can enjoy the complimentary afternoon tea service.

And this is not a sad little “grab a tea bag” situation.

This is full tea service with beautiful teas, scones, finger sandwiches, desserts, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger for hours talking about books, travel, and life decisions you may or may not actually make.

The entire hotel moves at the pace of relaxation.

No rushing.
No chaos.
No transactional energy.

Just warmth.

The Little Details Are What Make It Extraordinary

There are luxury hotels everywhere. But truly thoughtful hospitality? That’s rarer.

At The Ivy, you’ll find:

One of My Favorite Spa Experiences Ever

One stay in particular still lives rent-free in my brain.

My sister and I booked The Ivy’s Uncle Nearest spa experience, and it was one of the most memorable hotel spa treatments I’ve ever had.

Our feet were soaked in warm whiskey-infused treatments, and afterward we were served Uncle Nearest whiskey prepared exactly how we wanted it.

I had a hot toddy.
My sister went with whiskey over ice.

Then came the massage, which was incredible.

The entire experience felt cozy, indulgent, and uniquely rooted in culture and storytelling instead of generic luxury.

And as someone who appreciates thoughtful details, I also loved seeing Uncle Nearest featured prominently throughout the hotel.

Why The Ivy Feels So Inclusive

One of the things I appreciate most about The Ivy is how genuinely welcoming it feels.

Luxury spaces can sometimes feel cold, performative, or subtly exclusionary.

The Ivy feels the opposite.

The staff is warm without being overbearing. The environment feels relaxed instead of intimidating. And as a Black woman who travels often and has experienced luxury hospitality all over the world, I can say this honestly feels like one of the most inclusive luxury hotel experiences I’ve had.
